About Us.

Our Mission Statement: A Thousand Words seeks to merge the written word with visual art. We believe that a picture is truly "worth a thousand words."  Through the photographs and stories featured here, we hope to inspire Miamians to travel abroad to discover a once in a lifetime experience.

In 2015, A Thousand Words was founded by five Miami University students as part of the English 321 Literary Marketplace class. Having an interest in the beauty of writing and our physical surroundings, we hope to showcase photos and written pieces in this online literary journal. A Thousand Words calls to the Miamians who have studied abroad to share their experiences with others. By combining written stories and experiences with visual, photographic evidence, we hope to inspire others in the Miami community to travel and find adventure. We are seeking Miami’s creative minds for submissions and inspiration.

Roberta Fritz-Klaus is the website director of A Thousand Words. She is a junior Creative Writing and Premedical Studies major. In the future, Roberta hopes to become an OB/GYN. In the fall of 2014, Roberta studied abroad in Luxembourg at MUDEC and claims, "it was one of the most invigorating experiences of my young adult life. It changed who I was as a person and as a student." She recalls writting to her loved ones at home "with an actual pen on an actual sheet of paper" to send to MCAT books to the Chateau abroad. She encourages every student to study abroad because "it's the best way for us young sprouts to get comfortable with uncertainty."

Ben Byrd is the advertising manager for A Thousand Words. He is a fourth year student at Miami University studying creative writing. In the future Ben hopes to write novels and other storytelling projects in addition to a continued personal enjoyment in playing music.
